How many calories are in an avocado?

A medium avocado — about 140 g of flesh — is roughly 225 kcal. At around 160 kcal per 100 g it is three times the density of an apple, and the reason is not sugar. About 15 g of every 100 g is fat.

Per portion

Portion Calories Protein Carbs Fat
100 g flesh ~160 kcal 2 g 8.5 g 15 g
Half a medium (~70 g flesh) ~110 kcal 1.4 g 6 g 10 g
1 small (~100 g flesh) ~160 kcal 2 g 8.5 g 15 g
1 medium (~140 g flesh) ~225 kcal 2.8 g 12 g 21 g
1 large (~200 g flesh) ~320 kcal 4 g 17 g 29 g
1 cup cubed (~150 g) ~240 kcal 3 g 13 g 22 g

Only about 2 g of those carbohydrates are sugar. Most of the rest is fibre.

What changes the number

Variety, more than people expect. Hass — small, dark, pebbly skin — is the fat-rich type at 155 to 170 kcal per 100 g. The large smooth green varieties grown in India, Florida and the Caribbean are waterier, at roughly 110 to 140 kcal per 100 g, so a visibly bigger fruit can carry less energy than a small Hass.

Flesh, not whole weight. Skin and stone are 25 to 30 per cent of the fruit. Weigh a 200 g avocado whole and you overstate it by about 60 kcal.

What goes with it, which is usually the bigger number. Cooking barely matters — nobody boils an avocado — so the accompaniment is the variable:

  • One slice of toast under half an avocado: about 190 kcal for the pair
  • Olive oil adds 40 kcal a teaspoon, 120 a tablespoon
  • Shop-bought guacamole is 150 to 190 kcal per 100 g, and the tortilla chips next to it are nearer 500
  • Half an avocado blended with milk and honey: 350 to 450 kcal

Where it fits in a deficit

The fibre, about 7 g per 100 g, makes avocado genuinely filling for a fat-dominant food, and more so than nuts at a similar density. It is still 160 kcal per 100 g, and 3 g of protein in a whole fruit means it never stands in for a protein source.

Half is the portion that fits an ordinary day: 110 kcal, enough to dress a meal, small enough that nothing else has to move. A whole large one is 320 kcal and needs budgeting like a small meal — which is all a calorie deficit ever asks of a single food.

“Healthy fat” does not mean free fat

Avocado fat is mostly monounsaturated, and that is a sensible kind of fat to have in a diet. It is also 9 kcal per gram, exactly like butter’s. Nothing in the fatty-acid profile changes the arithmetic, and no plausible metabolic effect offsets a 225 kcal fruit.

This matters because avocado is one of the foods most often eaten in addition to a meal rather than as part of one. Two halves across a day — one on toast, one in a salad — is 220 kcal that rarely gets counted. Set it beside raw green jackfruit at 50 to 60 kcal per 100 g or litchis at 66, and the gap is not about which is better food. It is about how much of the day a plateful costs, which is the only thing the density ladder measures.
